The Alchemist written by Paulo Coelho published in 1988 is an international best seller. It is one of the miracles in world literature.It is originally written in portuguese by it's brazilian born author Paulo Coelho.It has been translated in to atleast 67 languages. It has sold more than 65 million copies in 56 different languages thereby acheiving the guinness world record for most translated book by a living author.
The Alchemist follows the journey of a shepherd boy named Santiago. A gypsy woman who has the ability to interpret dreams tells him that there is a treasure in the pyramids of Egypt. Through his journey to the pyramids, he meets an old king who tells him to sell his sheeps to travel to Egypt. He adds that "when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it". This is the core theme of the book. Along the way he meets an English man and continues his travel with him. They travel through the sahara desert and during his journey he meets and falls in love with a beautiful Arabian girl named Fatima. He asks Fatima to marry him but she says, she will only marry him after he finds his treasures. He is totally confused by this. Later he learns that true love will not stop one's dreams and if it does it is not true love. He starts the journey with an Alchemist. Santiago feels unsure about himself. As he listens to the alchemist's teachings he becomes more strong. The alchemist states, those who don't understand their personal legend, will fail to comprehend it's teachings. It is also stated that treasure is more worthy than gold.
Santiago is the protagonist of 'THE ALCHEMIST'. He joined the seminary as a boy but likes to travel the world. He finally gets the courage to ask his father for the permission to become shepherd, so that he can travel through the fields of Andalusia where he born. One night he dreamt of a child telling him that, if he goes to the pyramid he will find a treasure.
Later he meets a mysterious man in the town of Tarifa who sends him on a journey to the other side of Africa. It was the king, the king of salem afar of land. The king tells him about the soul of the world. He also gives him the magical stones Urim and Thammim.
The shopkeeper gives Santiago a job after he has been robbed. He takes the job at the crystal shop and learns much about the shopkeeper's attitude towards life and importance of dreaming. The shopkeeper is a very kind man and he understands Santiago's quest to go to find the treasure. Santiago is a curious boy whose open mindedness makes him particularly suited to find the treasure.
Santiago meets the Englishman on the caravan who is trying to become a great alchemist. He wanted to study with a famous alchemist who is a 200 year old man and have the ability to turn any metal in to gold. Santiago learns much about alchemy from the English man. They together travel across the sahara.
Fatima is a beautiful girl who lives at oasis.Santiago falls love with her at the well. They walk everyday for several weeks.
The alchemist, very powerful man who lives at the oasis in the Egypt. Santiago hears about him through the English man who wishes to study with the alchemist. The alchemist dresses in all black and is also in the position of the elixir of life and philosopher's stone.
This is one of the inspiring stories that i read. This gives an inspiration to find our dream and follow it. The difficulties in that journey is like the sahara desert. It is vast, but can be overcomed as Santiago do. Paulo Coelho wrote the alchemist in only two weeks in 1987.He explains that he was able to write at this pace, because this story was already written in his soul. The book's main theme is about finding one's destiny. This is one of the amazing books that the world literature seen.
